48 (A)The Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not rightly say that You are a (B)Samaritan, and You (C)have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not (D)have a demon; on the contrary, I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50 But (E)I am not seeking My glory; there is One who seeks it, and judges. 51 Truly, truly I say to you, if anyone (F)follows My word, he will never (G)see death.” 52 (H)The Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You (I)have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets as well; and yet You say, ‘If anyone (J)follows My word, he will never (K)taste of death.’ 53 You (L)are not greater than our father Abraham, who died, are You? The prophets died too. Whom do You make Yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, (M)If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; (N)it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; 55 and (O)you have not come to know Him, (P)but I know Him. And if I say that I do not know Him, I will be (Q)a liar like you; (R)but I do know Him, and I (S)follow His word. 56 (T)Your father Abraham was (U)overjoyed that he would see My day, and he saw it and rejoiced.” 57 (V)So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham [a]was born, [b](W)I am.” 59 Therefore they (X)picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus (Y)hid Himself and left the temple grounds.

Healing the Man Born Blind

As Jesus passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, “(Z)Rabbi, who sinned, (AA)this man or his (AB)parents, that he would be born blind?” Jesus answered, It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was (AC)so that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must carry out the works of Him who sent Me (AD)as long as it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am (AE)the Light of the world.” When He had said this, He (AF)spit on the ground, and made mud from the saliva, and applied the mud to his eyes, and said to him, “Go, wash in (AG)the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he left and (AH)washed, and (AI)came back seeing. So the neighbors, and those who previously saw [c]him as a beggar, were saying, “Is this not the one who used to (AJ)sit and beg?” Others were saying, “This is he,” still others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” [d]The man himself kept saying, “I am the one.” 10 So they were saying to him, “How then were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, “The man who is called Jesus made mud, and spread it on my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to (AK)Siloam and wash’; so I went away and washed, and I received sight.” 12 And they said to him, “Where is He?” He *said, “I do not know.”

Controversy over the Man

13 They *brought [e]the man who was previously blind to the Pharisees.
